The Nigeria Economic Situation: Vilification of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

A colleague recently shared a post on his facebook page about how Nigeria “changed” from 1st to 19th position between 2014 and 2017 among Africa’s Foreign Investment Destination. He is disgruntled about this “change”, and believed it is all due to Buhari’s incapability. He also support his post with a picture of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan with the inscription; “Hero of Democracy”. I personally do not believe in the 2014 FDI ranking nor do I believe the “Hero of Democracy” caption.

The 2014 ranking depicted a fake life Nigerians and the government were living in then, and unfortunately most Nigerians liked the fake life rather than real life that honestly showcase the economic and financial situation of Nigeria. Nigeria was dragged into recession long time ago by the activities or inactivity of bad leaders who covered up the plummeting economic situation in Nigeria. A blown cover-up exposed the real situation in Nigeria. Thus exposing Nigerian who used to be fake millionaire and billionaires who were engaged in businesses because of ill-gotten wealth, who in a real economic situation of Nigeria, where all the channels of ill-gotten wealth were blocked, cannot do business as usual, even they cannot send their children to expensive schools they were used to send their kids.

The main problem in Nigeria could be traced to the house of God where prayers have completely missed directions. It is unfortunate that common Nigerians are not engaged in sincere prayer for Nigeria, all pastors and imams are telling, and encouraging their congregation to do is to pray on how to amass wealth by any means possible, so they the followers can pay 10%, buys the clergy cars, houses, and jets. Hence it became competition among the worshippers who can buy the best jet or cars for the clergy. This is a serious situation in Nigeria, and need reorientation by the government and people. Prayer is good, but only operative after your best efforts has been invested. Nigerians need to be creative, diversify, and think about how Nigeria can be less dependent on foreign economy. The situation in the churches degenerated to a level where worshippers are children of God only in the house God, but in the public house where their faith is most needed, they are wolf and vultures ready to devour anything between them and money.

The questions Nigerians should ask is; how did the developed world get to where they are today?

It is nothing but stewardship and accountability, a culture that is lacking in all previous Nigeria governments except those tenure lead by Muritala Muhammad and Buhari. Lack of stewardship and accountability contribute to the current failed situation in Nigeria, but failure is not the end of the life, not trying or making efforts is what spells doom for a nation or individual. It is unfortunately that Nigeria and Nigerians are not trying, nor making any effort at correcting the failed situation in Nigeria. Efforts were made during the first attempt of Buhari and Idiagbon tenure, and by the government of Buhari and Osinbajo to correct the situation and rescue Nigeria from the failed-state status. However to the dismay of the interest of "Project Nigeria", Buhari and Idiagbon tenure was truncated, and Nigerians had three decades of lavishing-in-poverty while politicians embezzled billions of dollars with impunity under the watch of governments of Banbangida (the maradona), Goodluck Jonathan, and others.

Buhari and Osinbajo are now making efforts, but just like the first attempt of Buhari and Idiagbon, but what we are seeing is that corruption is winning big time, Niger-Delta Avengers are blowing up oil pipelines and installations, and Biafra is agitating for a republic, a move that was not made during the tenure of their brother Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. We all knew how Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and #dasukigate tried to scuttle democracy in Nigeria towards the 2015 Presidential election, and all those involved are still roaming the street of Nigeria as senators and governors, all because “Corruption-is-winning-big”. If the current government fail in her attempt to free Nigeria and Nigerians from the strong grip of corruption, Nigeria will suffer another decades of "Corruption-Rules-Nigeria", and thereafter be presented with yet another opportunity at redemption. I pray and hope Nigeria will not fail to free herself from corruption and mismanagement at the third attempt. Amen.
